FAMILY Work Retreats

Experiencing the Kingdom of God,
loving our neighbors as a family

It is our desire to give families the opportunity to serve together. When we serve together we also grow together. And in the process we nurture the relationships in the family. This is a beautiful context for experiencing kingdom values at work. And as you build a relationship with a neighbor, you are also helping them with a need that they have. What a wonderful way for form lasting memories!

The next step is for us to have a phone conversation to begin planning your Work Retreat experience. Email us at email@good-works.net to set up a phone conversation or just give us a call at 740-594-3336. We look forward to beginning this journey with you!

SPRING AND FALL
SATURDAY SERVICE

Good Works welcomes groups (2-15 people) who want to participate in a One-Day Work Retreat. This is a great opportunity to bring people together for a day to serve those in Athens County who struggle with poverty. While relationship building and service are good motivations to come, we also hope that the community of your group can be strengthened through serving together.

You will serve one of our neighbors in Neighbors Helping Neighbors, forming a life-giving relationship with someone while also addressing a need that they have.

Your group will provide Good Works with help that is very much needed in the care of our properties as you come and spend a day with us. You may be involved with yard work, painting, gardening, construction, wood splitting and other projects associated with the upkeep of the facilities and grounds managed by Good Works. You may also help with some of development projects that we do on these properties.

The next step is for us to have a phone conversation to begin planning your Work Retreat experience. Email us at email@good-works.net to set up a phone conversation or just give us a call at 740-594-3336. We look forward to beginning this journey with you!

Good Works welcomes all types of groups to come serve for a Work Retreat. While service is one motivation to come, some groups are also seeking to strengthen the community aspect of their group.

Summer Service
Work Retreats

Throughout the history of Good Works, we have provided opportunities for individuals to gain experience in and understanding of how to serve and empower our friends struggling with poverty. The summer experience with Good Works is an intensive time of discipleship for all who are involved. Your group will encounter the people and confront the issues of poverty that will help them understand God’s heart for people who struggle with these issues.

Central to Summer Service are the summer interns. We are seeking to provide college students an intensive ministry leadership experience, which will shape their worldview as they pursue God’s calling upon their lives. While Good Works staff is investing in them, they are providing leadership and discipleship to your group as part of their personal development. They will also be part of the community that lives in the Hannah House, contributing to the transforming experience of residents in the Life in Transition program. Click on the links below to get more information about the Summer Internship.

We call the groups of volunteers that come to serve with Good Works Worship Teams. These groups make Summer Service possible. Your Worship Team will participate in what we call a “Work Retreat,” which is an experience that is much more than just doing projects. It is about forming relationships with people who are often outside of your social circle. It is sharing a meal with someone who is experiencing homelessness. It is spending time in our solitude retreat cabin called “Carter Cabin.” It is interacting with children who are living in difficult situations. It is providing practical service to someone who is elderly or disabled. It is engaging in spiritual formation retreat experiences.  It is the offering up of your bodies as living sacrifices as an act of worship for a God who has loved you and given himself up for you.

Beginning with the summer months of 1995, we have welcomed a large number of groups, often youth groups from churches, who come to Good Works to assist with our ministry projects. These volunteer Work Retreats are essential for Good Works and transformational for everyone involved. The week long Summer Service Work Retreat is an opportunity for your group to intersect with the people in our community whom we call our neighbors.

Miami University Navigators with Good Works staff and interns

Miami University Navigators came for their Alternative Spring Break and served with Good Works staff and interns.

Alternative Spring break

The Alternative Spring Break (ASB) movement giving students the opportunity to serve in communities around the country is one Good Works embraces. We welcome students to come serve with us for a week. In addition to serving with us as we seek to help people in southeast Ohio who are struggling with poverty, we also hope that this will be a growing experience for your group members.

Good Works is a faith-based organization and we function as a community with a Christian Worldview. While some members of an ASB group may share this perspective, we recognize that not all the group members will. It is very important to us that we do not create barriers for groups to come serve with us. If your group would value learning about our Christian perspective, please let us know. We are happy to share this with you. However, if your group would prefer to keep this Work Retreat accessible to as many people as possible, we are very willing to adjust our language for the sake of the group. This is not a problem for us and we welcome the opportunity to serve with groups who come to us from different perspectives. Please let us know what your preferences are.

The next step is for us to have a phone conversation to begin planning your Work Retreat experience. Email us at email@good-works.net to set up a phone conversation or just give us a call at 740-594-3336. We look forward to beginning this journey with you!
